On August 18th, 1966, The Battle of Long Tan occurred at the height of the Vietnam War. The battle and the ongoing rain storm left the battlefield muddy and full of debris, but Major Harry Smith still continued on with his under-experienced crew of 108 New Zealand and Australian recruits. Despite being separated within the battlefield and outnumbered by 2500 Viet Cong and North Vietnamese soldiers, they pushed on and held ground for three and a half hours with the death toll mounting and increasing pressure from opposing forces.
